Filtration

Pool Filters

The filter is the most important part of the pool’s circulation system. Pool-water cannot be regarded as satisfactory for use, however adequately disinfected, if it contains small particles, dead bacteria and fine debris.

The filter removes these, keeping the water clean and clear.

Types of Filter

The most commonly used are sand filters. These consist of finely graded silica sand and with proper use the sand will remain in the filter tank for many years, although it is recommended that the sand be changed approximately every three years.

Cartridge filters are used for mainly above ground pools and spas. Diatomaceous Earth (DE) filters are rarely used.

Your dealer will be able to advise you on the most suitable filter for your pool.

Turnover Rate

The “turnover rate” is the time taken for the total volume of water which is equal to the pool’s capacity to pass through the filter. Eg. If your pool holds 14,000 gallons of water, the turnover rate would be the time it takes for the 14,000 gallons to pass through the filter.

Most domestic pools, with an average volume of 15,000 gallons, will have a turnover rate of approximately 6-8 hours.

The size of the filter you require is determined by your pool size.
